Mawng maths: collaborating to teach mathematics in an Australian Indigenous language

Abstract There are both educational and cultural benefits to first language (L1) instruction, particularly in the early years of school, but Australia, few Indigenous language–speaking students taught their own languages. Teaching mathematics languages requires linguistically capable educators identification development suitable terminology. This paper reports on collaborative a program reintroducing lessons Mawng at Warruwi Community School. project developed capacity an educator take more responsibility for content class teaching. Lessons focussing spatifal sequencing terminology were extend students’ use core grammatical features while also reinforcing important local knowledge. A collaboration between non-Indigenous researcher educator, concludes with factors contributing sustainability project.
